Qian Yi stars
in several productions of The Eternal
Palace, including at the Smithsonian’s
Freer Gallery of Art
in Washington, D.C., at Columbia University's
Miller Theatre and at Symphony
Space in New York. The
Eternal Palace, a Kun opera composed of 50 episodes
and well-known throughout Asia, takes us back to the courtly intrigues
of Tang dynasty China with the fateful story of Emperor Xuanzong (685-762)
and his ill-fated love for the most famous femme fatale in Chinese history,
Yang Guifei, played by Qian Yi. The auspicious day the two vowed their
eternal love under the moon, July 7th, is still celebrated as Valentine's
Day in the Far East.
