Qian Yi receives OPERA America 2022 IDEA Opera Residency

OPERA America Awards the 2022 IDEA Opera Residencies Encouraging the Development of New-to-Opera Creators of Color

Generously supported by the Katherine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund of The Scherman Foundation

OPERA America is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 IDEA Opera Residencies (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) program, an initiative that provides New York City-based composers and librettists of color an opportunity to explore opera as an expressive medium. The program is supported by the Katherine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund of The Scherman Foundation.

The second-year IDEA Opera Resident Artists are:

The Years Flow Like Water premieres at the 2008 Asian American International Film Festival as part of a program of shorts about courage and personal growth in the face of challenges. The film is followed by a Q&A. 

 


• Qian Yi stars as Precious Auntie in The Bonesetter's Daughter, an innovative new opera about the Chinese immigrant experience. Based on the best-selling Amy Tan novel,The Bonesetter's Daughtercombines Chinese and Western styles and features a libretto by Tan. The show premieres at the San Francisco Opera in fall 2008.

• In her second original work titled Fox Spirit, Qian Yi weaves together seven short stories into a single narrative that reveals fragments from an artist’s life. A work about magic and discovery in the present world, Fox Spirit is currently in development.

• Qian Yi joins Meryl Streep and Aiden Quinn in Dark Matter, director Chen Shi-Zheng's film about a brilliant young Chinese astrophysicist who goes on a shooting spree after his American dream goes awry.Dark Matteris the winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and opens in theatres in April 2007.

• Qian Yi performs opposite acclaimed Chinese opera star Wu Hsing Kuo (Legend of the Green Snake,The First Emperor) in The Contemporary Legend Theater premiere of Butterfly Dream. Commissioned for the Taiwan's National Theater as part of their 20th anniversary celebration, the production is “one of the most highly anticipated theatrical events of the year."

• An Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival, Triple Eight Palace tells the story of a Chinese-American girl struggling to find her way out of a violent Chinese-American subculture. Alexander Ku directs Qian Yi in this award winning film.
